Red Tail Catfish |
| Phractocephalus Hemioliopterus |
| Temperature: 70º - 81º |
| Diet: In the wild they feed on crabs and other crustaceans. In captivity they will eat just about anything that will fit in their mouth. Because they are a predator, they benefit by periods of fasting. |
| Length: 5' |
| Compatibility: As juveniles I hae kept them with similar size cichlids. I always made sure they had a place to hide. Keep a close eye on them a they age however, because they will eat their tank mates. In the picture above Ming, who was three foot at the time, swallowed my 18" Clown Knife. |
| Comments: I love these fish. My big Red Tail died about a year ago. He used to come to the top of the tank and beach himself on the edge like Shamu while I slipped food down his mouth. |
| Total in my Collection: 1 Adult, 1 Juvenile |

Red Tail (Swallowed 5"piece of quartz) Surprisingly enough he never lost his appetite. I thought it was a tumor initially. When I saw the uneven shape I noticed the quartz was missing and put two and two together. Since Red Tail Catfish will regurgitate what they can't digest, I over fed him minnows until he "gave back" the quartz. The stone is now a paperweight with an interesting story. | |||
